چکیده

1. Understanding an animal’s ecology requires knowledge of how individual variation in behaviour and physiology interact with each other and with the environment that an animal experiences. 2. Environmental variation affects behaviour, but whether individual variation in physiological performance also affects behaviour is poorly known. 3. We studied a high-altitude population of Deer Mice ( Peromyscus maniculatu s) inhabiting an environment cold enough that above-ground activity (behaviour) may be limited by the thermogenic capacity (maximal rate of oxygen consumption [ V o 2max ] during cold exposure) of mice. 4. We measured thermogenic capacity and operative environmental temperature (an integrated measure of the thermal environment), and then used robust-design capture– mark–recapture (CMR) models to test whether the thermal environmental and individual variation in thermogenic capacity affected capture probabilities (a likely indicator of above-ground activity). 5. Models including environmental covariates and thermogenic capacity were strongly favoured over models that did not include them. 6. Our results demonstrate that individual variation in physiological performance may constrain behaviour in nature. 7. Besides contributing to our understanding of interactions in the multivariate phenotype, our results suggest that it may be possible to elucidate the mechanistic factors influencing capture probabilities. Such information could be valuable to ecologists, life historians and wildlife managers.

Regulatory changes contribute to the adaptive enhancement of thermogenic capacity in high-altitude deer mice.

In response to hypoxic stress, many animals compensate for a reduced cellular O(2) supply by suppressing total metabolism, thereby reducing O(2) demand. For small endotherms that are native to high-altitude environments, this is not always a viable strategy, as the capacity for sustained aerobic thermogenesis is critical for survival during periods of prolonged cold stress. For example, survivo...

Circulatory mechanisms underlying adaptive increases in thermogenic capacity in high-altitude deer mice.

We examined the circulatory mechanisms underlying adaptive increases in thermogenic capacity in deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) native to the cold hypoxic environment at high altitudes. Deer mice from high- and low-altitude populations were born and raised in captivity to adulthood, and then acclimated to normoxia or hypobaric hypoxia (simulating hypoxia at ∼4300 m). Thermogenic capacity [ma...

Contributions of phenotypic plasticity to differences in thermogenic performance between highland and lowland deer mice.

Small mammals face especially severe thermoregulatory challenges at high altitude because the reduced O2 availability constrains the capacity for aerobic thermogenesis. Adaptive enhancement of thermogenic performance under hypoxic conditions may be achieved via physiological adjustments that occur within the lifetime of individuals (phenotypic plasticity) and/or genetically based changes that o...

Deer mouse aerobic performance across altitudes: effects of developmental history and temperature acclimation.

Aerobic physiology at high altitudes has been studied in many animals. Prior work on laboratory-bred deer mice (a species with a wide altitudinal range) showed depression of aerobic capacity at high altitude, even after acclimation. However, wild deer mice show no reduction in thermogenic performance at high altitude, and performance limits seem to be due to physiological and anatomical adjustm...

Functional genomics of adaptation to hypoxic cold-stress in high-altitude deer mice: transcriptomic plasticity and thermogenic performance.

In species that are distributed across steep environmental gradients, adaptive variation in physiological performance may be attributable to transcriptional plasticity in underlying regulatory networks. Here we report the results of common-garden experiments that were designed to elucidate the role of regulatory plasticity in evolutionary adaptation to hypoxic cold-stress in deer mice (Peromysc...
